330D, 336D and 340D Excavators Hydraulic System – Relief Valve (Swing) – Test and Adjust

Specification

Note: Certain machines will default to “Economy Mode” at machine startup. Change to “High Hydraulic Power Mode” before performing the test procedure.

Introduction

Two relief valves are located in the head of the swing motor. These relief valves limit the pressure in the left and right swing circuits to the swing relief valve settings. The following procedure will determine if the swing relief valves are out of adjustment.

Machine Preparation

  1. Position the machine on level ground and stop the engine.
  1. Release the pressure in the hydraulic system. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, “System Pressure – Release”.

    Pump compartment

  1. Attach a 41,368 kPa (6,000 psi) pressure sensor to pressure tap (2) .

  1. Disconnect connector (5) from the solenoid valve for swing parking brake (4) .

Test Procedure

  1. Start the engine.
  1. Increase the hydraulic oil temperature to 55° ± 5°C (131° ± 9°F).
  1. Place the machine controls at the following settings: engine speed dial “10” and AEC switch OFF. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, “Engine Performance – Test (Engine Speed)” for engine rpm settings.
  1. Place the hydraulic activation control lever in the UNLOCKED position.
  1. Move the swing joystick slowly and ensure that the swing parking brake is operating properly.

  1. Slowly move the swing joystick for a full SWING RIGHT operation and check the pressure for relief valve (8) at pressure tap (2) .
  1. Return the swing joystick to the NEUTRAL position.
  1. The pressure setting of the swing relief valve is 31400 + 1000 – 1500 kPa (4554 + 145 – 218 psi). If the pressure reading at pressure tap (2) is not within the specification, adjust the swing relief valve.
  1. In order to adjust the swing relief valve, loosen locknut (7) . Turn adjustment plug (6) until the pressure sensor reading at pressure tap (2) is 31400 + 1000 – 1500 kPa (4554 + 145 – 218 psi).

    Note: Turning adjustment plug (6) clockwise increases the pressure. Turning adjustment plug (6) counterclockwise decreases the pressure.

    Note: Always make final pressure adjustments on the pressure rise.

    Note: In order to prevent over setting, the adjustment should be stopped immediately after the pressure becomes within specification.

  1. Tighten locknut (7) to a torque of 120 ± 10 N·m (85 ± 7 lb ft).
  1. Slowly move the swing joystick for a full SWING LEFT operation and check the pressure for relief valve (11) at pressure tap (2) .
  1. Return the swing joystick to the NEUTRAL position.
  1. The pressure setting of the swing relief valve is 31400 + 1000 – 1500 kPa (4554 + 145 – 218 psi). If the pressure reading at pressure tap (2) is not within the specification, adjust the swing relief valve.
  1. In order to adjust the swing relief valve, loosen locknut (10) . Turn adjustment plug (9) until the pressure sensor reading at pressure tap (2) is 31400 + 1000 – 1500 kPa (4554 + 145 – 218 psi).

    Note: Turning adjustment plug (9) clockwise increases the pressure. Turning adjustment plug (9) counterclockwise decreases the pressure.

    Note: Always make final pressure adjustments on the pressure rise.

  1. Tighten locknut (10) to a torque of 120 ± 10 N·m (85 ± 7 lb ft).
  1. Return the joystick to the NEUTRAL position.
  1. After completing the test and/or the adjustment procedures for the swing relief valves, stop the engine.
  1. Release the pressure in the hydraulic system. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, “Hydraulic System Pressure – Release”.
  1. Connect connector (5) to the solenoid valve for swing parking brake (4) .
