Pressurized system: Hot coolant can cause seri-
ous burn. To open cap, stop engine, wait until ra-
diator is cool. Then loosen cap slowly to relieve
the pressure.
1. Open the engine access door. Refer to Operation
and Maintenance Manual, “Access Doors and
Covers”.
2. T ilt the radiator guard upward. Refer to Operation
and Maintenance Manual, “Radiator Tilting”.

3. Maintain the coolant to the top of the sight gauge
with the radiator in the LOWERED position. The
sight gaug
e is located on the right side of the
radiator.

4. If you need to ad
d coolant to the radiator, the
radiator cap is located on the upper left corner of
the radiator. Remove the radiator cap slowly in
order to relie
ve system pressure.
Note: Inspect the cooling system hoses for any
leaks, crack
s, or signs of deterioration. Replace any
damaged hoses.
5. Inspect the r
adiator cap and the gasket. Replace
the cap if the cap or the gasket is damaged. Install
the radiator cap.
6. Tilt the radiator guard downward.

Replace
SMCS Code
: 1355-510; 1393-010
Replace the thermostat on a regular basis in order to
reduce th
e chance of unscheduled downtime and of
problems with the cooling system. Failure to replace
the engine’s thermostat on a regularly scheduled
basis co
uld cause severe engine damage.
The thermostat should be replaced after the cooling
system h
as been cleaned. Replace the thermostat
while the cooling system is completely drained or
while the cooling system coolant is drained to a level
that is
below the thermostat housing.
Caterpillar engines incorporate a shunt design
coolin
g system. It is mandatory to always operate the
enginewithathermostat.
