Fuel System Water Separator - Replace
When the water s
eparator element for the fuel system
needs to be drained, an indicator light on the dash
will be illuminated. The water separator is located in
the compartme
nt on the left side of the machine.
Note: Do not fill fuel filters before installation in any
circumstanc
e. Do not open high pressure fuel lines in
order to bleed air from the fuel system.

2. Place a suitable container under the water
separator i
n order to catch any fuel that might spill.

Note: This primary fuel filter has vent screw (2).
3. Install a suitable tube onto drain (1). Loosen vent
screw (2).
4. Open drain (1). Allow the fluid to drain into the
container.
5. Tighten drain (1) by hand pressure only. Remove
the tube and dispose of the drained fluid in a safe
place.
6. Tighten vent screw to 6 N·m (53 lb in).
7. Close the access door.
If the engine fails to start, change the fuel filter. If
there is a power loss, change the fuel filter.

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained
during performance of inspection, maintenance, test-
ing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to
collect the fluid with suitable containers before open-
ing any compartment or disassembling any compo-
nent containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, “Caterpillar
Dealer Service Tool Catalog” for tools and supplies
suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar
products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and
mandates.
Note: Do not fill fuel fi lters before installation in any
circumstance. Do not open high pressure fuel lines in
order to bleed air from the fuel system.
