When you operate the machine at temperatures below 20°C (4°F), refer to Special P ublication, SEBU5898, “Cold Weather
Recom mendations for All Caterpillar Machines ”. This is available from your Caterpillar dealer.
(2)
Supplem
ental heat is recomm ended for cold soaked starts below the minimum ambient temperature. Supplemental heat may be required
for col
d soaked starts that are above the minimum temperature that is stated, depending on the parasitic load and other factors. Cold
soaked
starts occur when the engine has not be en oper ated for a period of time. This allows the oil to become m ore viscous due to
cooler
ambient temperatures.
(3)
API CF oils are not recommended for Caterpillar 3500 Series and smaller Direct Injection (DI) diesel engines. API CF-4 oils are not
recommended for C aterpillar mac hines with dies el engines .
(4)
Cat Arctic DEO SYN is an SAE 0W-30 oil viscosity grade.
(5)
API C J-
4, API CI-4, A PI CI-4 PLUS, and API CH-4 o ils are acceptable if the requirements of Caterpillar's ECF-1-a (Engine Crankcase Fluid
speci
fication - 1 -a) are m et. AP I CJ-4, A PI C I-4, API CI-4 PLUS , and A PI C H-4 oils that have not m et the requirements of Caterpillar's
ECF-1
-a or ECF-2specification may cause reduced engine life. Refer to Special Publication, SEBU6250, “Caterpillar Machine F luid
Recom
mendations” for more information to the C AT ECF specifications and other commercial oils.
(6)
SAE 10W -30 is the preferred viscosity grade for the 3116, 3126, C7, C-9 and the C9 diesel engines when the ambient tem perature is
between -18° C (0° F) and 40° C (104° F).
(7)
Cat HYDO Advanced 10 is the preferred oil for use in most Caterpillar machine hydr aulic and hydrostatic transm ission systems w hen
ambient temperature is between −20 °C (−4 °F) and 40 °C (104 °F). Cat HY DO A dvanced 10 has an SAE v iscosity grade of 10W. Cat
HYDO Advanced 10 has a 50% increase in the standard oil drain interval for machine hydraulic systems ( 3000 hours ve rsus 2000
hours) ove r second and th ird c hoice oils - when following the maintenance interval schedule for oil filter changes and for oil sam pling that is
stated in the Operation and Maintenance Manual for your particular machine. 6000 hour oil dra in intervals are possible when using S·O·S
Services oil analysis. Contact your Cat dealer for details. In order to gain the most benefit from the improved performance designed into Cat
HYDO Advanced 10, when switching to Cat HY DO Advanced 10, cross contamination with the previous oil should be kept to less than 10%.
(8)
Seco
nd c hoice oils are C at HYDO, Cat M TO, Cat DEO, Cat DEO-ULS, Cat TDTO, Cat Arctic TDTO, Cat TDTO-TMS, Cat DEO SYN,
Cat
Arctic DEO SYN. Third choice oils are commerc ial oils that meet Cat ECF-1-a, Cat ECF-2, Cat ECF-3, Cat TO-4, or the Cat TO-4M
spe
cifications, and that have a minimum zinc additive level of 0.09 percent (900 ppm). Commercial biodegradable hydraulic oil must meet
the
Cat B F-2 specification. Refer to the machine Operation and Ma intenance Manual and/or contact your local Caterpillar dealer before
usi
ng commercial oils that m eet Cat BF-2 in C at Hydraulic Excavators. The minimu m viscosity for comm erc ial alternative oils used in most
Cat
machine hydraulic and hydrostatic transmission systems is 6.6 cSt at 100 °C (212 °F) (“ASTM D 445”).
(9)
Comm ercial biodegradable hy draulic oil (HEE S) must meet the Caterpillar BF-2 specification.
(10)
Cat TDTO-TMS (“Transmission Multi-Season”) (synthetic blend that exceeds the specifications of TO-4M multigrade oil)
(11)
The
First Choice is Cat Arctic TDTO S YN with SA E 0W-20 viscosity gra de. The Second Choice is oils of full s ynthetic bas e stock without
vi
scosity index improvers that meet the p erformance requirements of the TO-4 s pecific ation for the SAE 30 viscosity grade. Typical lubricant
vi
scosity grades are SAE 0W-20, S AE 0W-30, and S AE 5W-30. Th e T hird Choice is oils that contain a TO-4 additive package a nd a
lu
bricant viscosity grade of SAE 0W-20, S AE 0W-30 , o r SAE 5W-30.
(12)
The First Choice is oils o f full syn thetic base stock without viscosity index improvers that m eet the performance requirements of the Cat
TO-4 specification for the SAE 30 viscosity grade. Typical viscosity grades are SAE 0W-20, SAE 0W - 30, and SA E 5W-30. The Second
Choice is oils w ith a TO-4 additive package and a lubricant viscosity g rade of SAE 0W -20, SAE 0W -30, or SAE 5W -30.
(13)
Except for the winch hydraulic system, use SAE 30 viscosity grade for 0°C (32°F) to 43°C (110°F) or Cat TDTO-TMS for −20°C (−4°F ) to
50°C (122°F).
(14)
D
o not use SAE 50 oil viscosity grade in transmissions with “ICM” control. Do not use S AE 50 oil viscosity grade for the winch cases with
h
ydraulic drive.
(15)
Cat GO (Gear Oil) is available in SAE 80W - 90 and SAE 85W-140 viscosity grades.
(16)
Cat Sy nthetic G O is an SA E 75W-140 oil viscosity grade.
