Cooling System Coolant Extender (ELC) - Add
d. Start the engin
e and run the engine until the
engine reaches operating temperature.
e. Stop the engin
e and allow the engine to cool.
f. Loosen pressure cap (1) slowly in order to
relieve any p
ressure in the cooling system.
g. Open drain valve (2) and allow the coolant to
drain into a
suitable container.
h. Flush the radiator with clean water until the
draining wa
ter is transparent.
8. Close the drain valve and inst all the access cover
underneat
h the engine.
9. Add the Extended Life Coolant. Refer to the
following
topics:
•
Special Publication, SEBU6250, “Caterpillar
Machine F
luids Recommendations”
•
Operation and Maintenance Manual, “Capacities
(Refill)”
10. Start the engine. Operate the engine without
the cool
ing system pressure cap until the water
temperature regulator opens and the coolant level
stabilizes.
11. Maintain the coolant level between the maximum
mark and the minimum mark on the top shunt tank.
Note: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual,
“Cooling System Coolant Level - Check” for additional
infor
mation.
12. Inspect the O-ring of the cooling system pressure
cap. I
f the O-ring is damaged, replace the
pressure cap.
13. Inst
all the cooling system pressure cap.
14. Stop the engine.
15. Close the access panel on top of the engine
compartment.
16. Close the left engine access door.

Cooling S ystem Coolant
Extender (ELC
)-Add
SMCS Code: 1352-544-NL; 1395-544-NL
Personal injury can result from hot coolant, steam
and alkali.
At operating temperature, engine coolant is hot
and under pressure. The radiator and all lines
to heaters or the engine contain hot coolant or
steam. Any contact can cause severe burns.
Remove filler cap slowly to relieve pressure only
when engine is stopped and radiator cap is cool
enough to touch with your bare hand.
Do not attempt to tighten hose connections when
the coolant is hot, the hose can come off causing
burns.
Cooling S ystem Conditioner contains alk ali. Avoid
contact with skin and eyes.
When Caterpillar Extended Life Coolant (ELC)
is used, an extender must be added to the
cooling system. See Operation and Maintenance
Manual, “Maintenance Interval Schedule” for the
proper service interval. The amount of extender is
determined by the cooling system capacity.

use the formula in Table 13 in order to determine the
correctamountofextender.
